Pearl Harbor

What happened...

 

At 7:53 in the morning of December 7th 1941 the first shallow warter torpedo made contact with the fleet.

 

The attack on Pearl Harbor is one of the most infamous events in American history. 

​The attack was strategic and designed to wipe out important military targets in the most efficent amount of tme. The first wave of bombs was launched at 7:53am. The next was at 8:55am and by 9:55am, by 1:00pm in the afternoon, the carriers that had launched the Japanese plans were on their way back to Japan. The entire fleet was caught unprepared for such an attack, and was unable to respond in defense.

Behind them they left destruction and chaos, 2,403 Americans were dead, 188 destroyed planes and a devestated Pacific Fleet that included 8 damaged or destroyed battleships. In one stroke the Japanese action silenced the debate that had divided Americans ever since the German defeat of France left England alone in the fight against the Nazi terror.

 

America goes to war.

On the homefront, America sprung to life, as men left to fight in the Pacific and women rushed to join up with the US Naval Nurse corps, and took over the jobs their husbands left unmanned. It was the largest war effort America had ever seen. This effort would help pull America out of the Great Depression and got her back on her feet.
